The 5Gs are a vision for a society that is Gracious, Green, Giving, Grounded and Grateful.
The 5Gs are the essential life skills for a successful, sustainable and prosperous 21st century Singapore. As Singapore grows we stand at the crossroads of two futures. The 5Gs are the operating system for a sustainable future, championed by a compassionate, forward thinking society lead from the Ground-Up.

“Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.”
- Khalil Gibran
Graciousness is the most fundamental expression of good character – graciousness costs nothing, but is a powerful force for improving the well being of yourself and those around you. If we cannot find time or energy for graciousness, we cannot hope to find the time and energy to address the more serious challenges we face in our world – this makes graciousness the fundamental building block of a 5G society. This costless benefit is why graciousness comes first, even in times of crisis there is no excuse for acting ungraciously, when such behaviour can only add to the crisis.
Kind words have the power to radically change other people and our relationships, at no cost to ourselves. The first measure of a progressive, 21st century nation, is the courtesy with which we treat all others in our society. A truly compassionate, forward thinking society, therefore must be built on this simple understanding of kindness.
True graciousness comes from empathy. Empathy is crucial to a well functioning and happy society and for individuals within that society. A 5G society nurtures a kind heart that accounts for others. This is the basis of fair dealing between all, and a foundation for a resilient and happier society.
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
- Albert Einstein
Being green and appreciating nature teaches us how to thrive in harmony with that natural world that supports all life on Earth. A rich connection with nature is not only essential for our very survival, but for what it can teach us, about the world, and about ourselves.
You cannot save what you do not know. To truly know the importance of nature to our lives, our society and even our economy, we must witness our interconnections with nature first hand.
Through experiencing nature regularly with all five senses, people gain a much more powerful understanding of the role of our lives in nature, and nature in our lives.
Sustainable living is not leaving the environment untouched but to be able to harmoniously interact with nature and contemplate from within it.
Emphasises on putting into practice both experience and knowledge gained to make a personal effort in contributing to a greener and more environmentally sustainable society. It starts with a higher awareness to what effects our daily habits may have on nature and then proceeds to how we are able to positively change these habits.
Green Living is adopting a life-style that is in balance with nature’s resources. What we take from Earth we also need to give back or be able to replenish at an equal rate. In WOW Kampung environmental awareness is exemplified through leading by example.
Holistic sustainability education bridges our personal interconnections with nature into the broader context of the world. Understanding of food security, and the management of our energy, waste and water. This understanding connects our personal experience with the science of sustainability and understanding the holistic implications for society and humanity of the path we are currently on, and the urgent need to rethink and act on our future.
“If you are generous, you will gain everything.”
Going beyond clocking hours and donating money – a true sense of giving is to give generously and fully to any commitment you undertake. A generous society takes pride in all work, whether voluntary or otherwise, knowing that giving really does pay forward and create a stronger, happier society.
Generous to others
A recognition that generosity breeds more generosity and gives abundance. We foster a sense of giving that goes beyond clocking hours and meeting quotas – a true generosity through the desire to help others and create a better world.
Giving our best
If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. We have seen the results of generosity that ends with turning up to clock hours. Generosity is also about how we give our time and attention to everything that we undertake. A generous person is generous not only in aspects of time and money, but in the way they apply themselves – once a decision is made to give, giving is wholehearted, giving unwaveringly to the work, relationships, and to the community we have committed ourselves to.
“The loftiest towers rise from the ground.”
- Chinese Proverb
As the great challenges of our generation mount, we need humble, practical individuals that are prepared to get their hands dirty and take initiative. Such individuals take personal responsibility for the change they want to see in the world and have a realistic appreciation of the work on the ground.
Hands On and Practical
Success and prosperity requires work of all kinds, grounded individuals rise to any challenge because no work is beneath them. Being grounded develops a willingness to undertake hard work and the resilience to withstand hard work. Through this a respect for the hard work of others is cultivated.
A grounded individual is able to take ownership and responsibility for their actions, empowering them to take control of their lives and their role in creating a world that they want to live in. Our world of diminished personal responsibility has resulted in young adults that do not take responsibility for their actions or for the world that they would like to live in. If we want a good world, then it is everyones responsibility to shape that world.
Realistic and Humble
Grounded leaders are connected to a realistic understanding of an organisation at all levels. They understand the essential role that all members of a community play in shaping the success of that community. Being grounded teaches us all to have a realistic understanding of people, the environment, and the state of affairs on the ground. This realism and humility enables us to roll up our sleeves and do what is needed, which may not always what we would like to do.
“饮水思源 – When you drink water always remember the source.”
- Chinese Proverb
In order to be grateful, we must be truly aware of the blessings around us: clean air & water, good food, a comfortable home and freedom from violence have come easily to many of us. These blessings have passed to us through the generosity of our parents and ancestors. The 5Gs teach us to truly do justice to those gifts by ensuring that we do not take them for granted.
A truly grateful society recognises and acknowledges the work, effort and care given by all in maintaining a 5G society. Expressing acknowledgement is essential for harmony and happiness in any community. By expressing gratitude, we teach others about our good fortune, our respect for one another, and the value of the 5Gs.
A 5G society is one that appreciates the great fortune that our parents and society have bestowed on us, and expresses gratitude by honouring their sacrifices by striving to build a model of a 5G Singapore on the foundation we have been granted by their hard work.
