How we teach the 5Gs
Whether in the classroom, or outdoors, at WOW Kampung, our teaching of the 5Gs goes far beyond the academic. Where ever we are we create or find a living class room that forces students and adults alike to adapt and interact with the people and the space.
As we believe they are essential life skills that everyone must practice, you will find the the 5Gs integrated holistically into even our simplest of our programmes and role modeled by our team.
Living the 5Gs themselves, all of our facilitators model and nurture graciousness throughout all activities. Our passionate facilitators take great care to draw attention to and reflect upon incidents that highlight the need for graciousness and turn them into teachable moments.
Acts of service that are included throughout all our programmes are an opportunity to teach others to serve with graciousness.
In our living classroom at the SL Kampung, participants discover first hand their own connections with nature and it’s value.
Our facilitators come from diverse environmental backgrounds such as architecture, sustainable urban farming, water engineering and environmental outreach, and have learned to apply sustainability and green learning to their field of expertise.
This experience is reflected in the design and experience of our programmes to give students a holistic understanding of the environment that is grounded in a practical, scientific understanding, but made relevant to our lives.
Whenever giving, be it time, gifts, or effort, our programmes and facilitators emphasise the human impact of giving – on others, and on ourselves.
Through our focus on the enrichment of giving, we help students to understand the need to be giving as a value rather than as an action.
Generosity of time, effort and ideas is modelled by our dedicated facilitators and we set the same high standard for all our students. Our programmes are carefully crafted to ensure students are set challenging but achievable team goals to ensure their need to be generous to their team mates and themselves in the effort they put in.
Our always changing living classroom at the Kampung forces students to be grounded and connected to what is happening around them. This teaches them to take practical steps towards their objectives, learning to take measured risks and to get their hands dirty to accomplish their goals as and when needed.
As they get their hands dirty, they discover true equality with all those around them and discover their humility.
This instills an adaptability and practicality free from ego based on observation and integration with our surroundings enabling us to to thrive in any situation.
Our programmes give students exposure to the hard work required to sustain our high quality of living, engendering a true sense of gratitude.
Following such experiences students are given time to quietly reflect and process their experience, during which participants frequently make their own discoveries about gratitude and an understanding of their good fortune in life.
Habits of expressing gratitude are placed within our programmes to give students the experience of the power of expressing gratitude, and to develop in them a habit that should continue long after the programme.
